Owning a bed and breakfast was Shelley and Jim's 30-year dream, and Behr House is where it came true. Jim flew as a pilot in the Air Force, with a three-year tour in England where the couple fell in love with village B&Bs. Shelley then spent 27 years in the hospitality industry learning the craft.

After spotting the Royal Oaks Loop property in the fall of 2018, renovating for six months and moving from Austin, they welcomed their first guests in June 2020. Since then they have shared their little "peace of heaven" in the Texas Hill Country with hundreds of guests, together with their daughter Katie.

Local Guide

Fredericksburg and the Hill Country

Behr House sits about 1.5 miles off west Main Street, so town is minutes away while the nights stay quiet. Here is how your hosts would point you.

Free to wander

Main Street, German Roots

  • Fredericksburg's German heritage street: Biergartens, bakeries, antique shops and galleries along Main. About 5 min drive.
  • Stroll the Sunday farmers market vibe on weekends, or just window-shop the 100-plus shops.
Paid

Wine Country on US-290

  • Dozens of wineries line US-290 east of town, including big names like Becker Vineyards and Grape Creek. Tastings are paid and pour prices add up, so pick two or three. 10 to 20 min drive.
  • Designate a driver or book a wine shuttle; weekend tasting rooms fill by midday.
Paid

Enchanted Rock

  • The famous pink granite dome in Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. Hike the Summit Trail for big-sky views. About 18 miles north, roughly 30 min drive.
  • Day passes sell out on weekends and holidays, so reserve online before you go. Bring more water than you think you need.
Free entry

Wildseed Farms

  • Working wildflower farm with walking trails, a butterfly garden and a market. About 10 min drive east on US-290.
  • Peak bluebonnet season is late March to April, but the grounds are worth a stroll year round.
Paid

National Museum of the Pacific War

  • Smithsonian-level WWII Pacific museum on Main Street, in Admiral Nimitz's hometown. Allow at least half a day. About 5 min drive.
Free

LBJ Ranch

  • The Texas White House and ranchlands at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park. About 14 miles east, roughly 20 min drive.
  • Check tour availability before heading out; the driving loop through the ranch is the easy win.

Where to Eat

  • German plates: Fredericksburg does schnitzel, sausage and strudel properly. Try a Biergarten on Main for the full effect.
  • Hill Country BBQ: smoked brisket joints dot the area; lines are shortest at lunch on weekdays.
  • Peach season: in summer, roadside stands sell Fredericksburg peaches worth planning around.

Watch Out For

  • Weekend crowds: Main Street parking fills by late morning on Saturdays. Go early or walk from the quieter side streets.
  • US-290 traffic: the wine corridor backs up on weekend afternoons. Leave tastings before 4 p.m. or stay for dinner.
  • Deer after dark: deer cross rural roads at dusk and dawn. Slow down on Royal Oaks Loop and the ranch roads.
  • Flash floods: Hill Country creeks rise fast in storms. Never drive through water over a low-water crossing.

Getting Here

  • From Austin: about 1.5 hours west on US-290.
  • From San Antonio: about 1.25 hours north on I-10, then US-87 into town.
  • Timing tip: check-in is 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. and the innkeepers are not staffed around the clock, so plan to arrive inside the window and call ahead if you are delayed.
